Japan made no mistakes as they defeated Philippines 3-0 in their AFC U17 Asian Cup™ 2023 Qualifiers Group A opener on Monday.
The defeat was Philippines’ second, having fallen 2-0 to Turkmenistan on Saturday.
Turkmenistan play Syria later on Monday.
Philippines 0-3 Japan
Japan dominated the tie at the Prince Mohammad International Stadium in Zarqa City but were frustrated by a resolute Philippines defence.
Philippines however, finally caved in and it came just before the half-time break with Yutaka Michiwaki doing the damage.
The forward breached the Philippines defence in the 43rd minute and before the Southeast Asian side could recover, Michiwaki hit home Japan’s second just before the half-time whistle.
Philippines, to their credit, tried to find their way back into the tie but forward Homare Tokuda sealed the victory for Japan with his 85th minute goal.
Japan play Turkmenistan on Wednesday while Philippines will take on Jordan.
